“They Call Me Adam Yauch But I’m MCA”

Yeah, I’m a little late on this one, because I was out of town for the past several days.

Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys died last week after a battle with cancer.  The Beastie Boys were a core cog in my generation’s interest in any music other than classic rock and pop.  They practically invented their own genre, and Licensed To Ill was the album that changed everything.

I can’t tell you how many times me and my buddy Mike did a call and response rap version of Paul Revere back in 6th grade.

“I been had a little horsey named Paul Revere.
Just me and my horsey and a quart of beer.
Ridin’ cross the land, kickin’ up sand.
Sheriff Posse is on my tail cuz I’m in demand.
One lonely Beastie I be,
all by myself without nobody.
The sun is beatin’ down on my baseball hat.
The air is gettin’ hot, the beer is gettin’ flat.
Lookin’ for a girl, I ran into a guy.
His name is MCA, I said “howdy”, he said “hi.” “

Every song was an anthem of my youth.   Brass Monkey.   No Sleep Till Brooklyn.  Fight For Your Right.  Girls.   The New Style.  Rhymin and Stealin.    Where do you stop?

Kids, if you don’t own License to Ill, do yourself a favor and buy it ASAP.

RIP, Adam Yauch
