The Garden – 2013

This was a rough year for our garden: we planted at the end of May, and it rained almost every single day in June.  I watered the garden for the first time at the end of August.   For the uninitiated, it turns out this isn’t quite the blessing you might think it is:  most of our vegetables don’t like to get drowned every day for 2 months.   We had to replant our cucumbers after the first 2 weeks, but miraculously our peppers didn’t die.   We planted 6 each of green bell peppers, red bell peppers, hot cherry peppers and jalapenos.   The excessive rain resulted in stunted plant sizes, which then had trouble bearing the weight of the fruit.   I already picked a bunch of jalapenos and cherries, but our bell peppers are currently rotting on the plants:  almost every pepper has some sort of blight on it.

Elsewhere in the garden, our pumpkins are doing well:

as is our solitary cayenne pepper plant:

Brussels sprouts are still alive and pending, but peas and beans had a bad year, as did eggplant.    Cucumbers were mediocre, and even our (normally prolific) zucchini production was desolate.

Gratuitous closing picture of Nikko doing his Yoda imitation:

Nikko got adopted today, and just left to go home with a couple from Brooklyn.     We’ll miss him, and are already considering fostering a puppy that the National Brussels Griffon Rescue needs a temporary home for…
