The Boss At His Best: For You

Growing up, my dad taught in a school system a few towns over, so my sister and I went to school there because the schools were slightly better.   I remember, as I’d do this 20 minute drive to high school twice a day in the early 90s, wearing out the cassette tape (kids: ask your parents what a “cassette tape” is) “Greetings From Asbury Park” – Bruce Springsteen’s debut album.   Regular readers know that I’m a Springsteen fanatic, having seen him 40-something times, a total I’ll add to this weekend at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night.

I wanted to draw attention to this video from a show The Boss did a few weeks ago in Helsinki, Finland.   The show was notable for its FOUR HOUR length, which doesn’t even include the 30 minute acoustic set he played 90 minutes earlier for the fans streaming in super early.    The clip is from an oldie off of “Greetings From Asbury Park” – For You – and it’s absolute perfection.

It’s not really one for the masses, but aficionados will hopefully appreciate this as much as I did.   Watching Bruce “figure out” the guitar chords (he’s actually done this solo-acoustic on piano previously) for the first minute, before exclaiming “got it!” is like watching genius at work, and his vocals prove that this old man has not lost it yet.

Thanks, Boss.
