Niklas Bendtner’s 100,000 Euro Lucky Underwear

Denmark’s Niklas Bendtner was fined 100k Euros by UEFA – European Football’s governing body.  Take it away, Times of India:

“UEFA last week announced disciplinary proceedings against the player for “improper conduct (Law 4 of the Laws of the Game)” during the Group B game in Lviv, Ukraine, that Denmark lost 3-2.

Law 4, which covers “The players’ equipment” states: “Players must not reveal undershirts which contain slogans or advertising. A player removing his jersey to reveal slogans will be sanctioned by the competition organiser.

Article 18.18 of the “Regulations of the UEFA European Football Championship 2010-12” also states: “All kit items worn during the final tournament must be free of any sponsor advertising.”

The money quote, though comes from Irish Bookmaker Paddy Power – the company behind the underwear:

‘I’ve no doubt that the luck of the Irish thanks to our lucky underpants helped him find the back of the net twice!”

Bendtner is also banned from the next 2014 FIFA World Cup match that he is eligible for – including qualifying matches.   He may appeal the punishment.

Ironically, UEFA, which has been trying to crack down on racism, has levied much smaller financial penalties for racist issues than for the Underwear Incident.
