I Despise Rick Santorum

I wrote a post about 6 months ago about how politics was one of those “untouchable” topics that nothing good can come from debating.   That’s why I generally avoid the topic on my blog.

But Rick Santorum, and America’s reaction to him (by that I mean: that there is any sort of support at all), makes my blood boil.   I don’t know how else to say this:  I would be embarrassed to be a citizen of a country that would elect Rick Santorum as President.   Embarrassed.   Ashamed.  Sad beyond words.  Not that this outcome is likely, but an ignoramus like Santorum is getting far more than the 3 seconds of fame that he deserves.  Can’t we move on from this douchebag?  Seriously?

I’m a bit late to this specific story, but about a month ago, Santorum decided to make up some scare tactic falsehoods about medical care in The Netherlands in order to scare his ig’nant supporters into thinking that that their doctors will be likely to Euthanize them under Obamacare (RSS viewers please click on the post to see the embedded videos):

It turns out that basically everything he says about euthanasia in the Netherlands is a figment of his imagination.  There are no “do not euthanize me” bracelets, euthanasia does not account for anything near 10% of all deaths in the Netherlands, and half of Euthanasia deaths are not involuntary.   But guess what – Santorum is “strong pro life”  according to his press secretary, so I guess that makes it ok for him to make up whatever schlock he wants to – to lie to the American people and try to scare them with ignorance:

The repeated reply “Rick is strong pro life” makes me want to smash my keyboard with my face.

One of the funny quirks of New Hampshire politics is that we have “Town Meetings” where the residents get together in the high school gym and vote on the Town’s budget, policies, etc.   It’s a bizarrely Democratic process, but the frustrating thing is that there’s no “ombudsman” who corrects the nonsense that people just make up.  If someone gets up to the mic and says “I don’t like this idea because it’s like stealing from the elderly,” even if the concept has nothing to do with stealing from the elderly, no one corrects him: if you want to set the record straight, you have to go wait in line, wait your turn, and then try to refer to the prior speaker who just made stuff up.   That gets frustrating.

That’s what Santorum is like – only he’s running for the most important political office in the world.

By the way, we all know how Holland ended up on Santorum’s radar at all, right?   He heard about all of their dikes…. (zzzzzzzzzzzzing!)

Edit: readers can now purchase their own “Not Santorum 2012” shirt!
